Chinese New Year

This week we have been learning about Chinese New Year. We have completed lots of different activities and made Chinese dragons. We have found the first letter of our name in Chinese and painted it with fine paintbrushes. We have also been writing Chinese numbers and mark making in red sand. Today we started our weekly problem solving challenge, we worked with our partners to try and draw pictures to help with our working out.

Can you work out this challenge at home and draw a picture to show your working out.

There are 8 Chinese lanterns hanging on a line, 2 blew away. How many are left?

Well done to all the children who have made a Chinese dragon or elf house, these are now on display in the hall.

The Magic Porridge Pot

The story of the week this week has been ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’. We really enjoyed this story and found out the meaning of some new words. On Thursday, we thought about what we could make if we found all that left over porridge. We had some really good ideas; statues, ice creams, animal food. The best idea came from Dane, he wanted to make a Lamborghini out of porridge.

Today (Friday) we have made and tasted porridge with a little bit of honey. Most of the children enjoyed it and Daniel W, Lewis, Paige T and Jenson all had 3 bowls. Some children had 2 bowls and some had 1. Only two children didn’t want to try it.  Well done Reception.

Displays

This week we have put up two displays. Our first one is ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’ and we have cut our own pots out, mixed our own porridge and glitter  and sprinkled it on the card. They look like the porridge is going to spill all over school. We don’t think Mr. Bennett will be impressed!

Our second display is the sewing we finally completed. We all think they look lovely now they are on the wall.

The Elves and the Shoemaker

This week the children have been reading ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’. We have done lots of activities around the story. The children have sequenced pictures of the story and talked about what is happening in the pictures.  In maths we have some counting and addition work.

Some children have been pretending to be elves and had a go at sewing. We have done a simple running stitch around the initial letter of our name. It took that much time that not everybody managed to have a turn. Don’t worry though, we will finish off next week. We hope you like the photographs of our sewing. Mr Bennett and Miss Bowers were very impressed!!
